Guardian Home Program
What is a Guardian Home?
At Native Corgis, we believe that every dog deserves to have a loving, forever home. All of our dogs are part of our family and live in our home rather than kennels so that we know they are living life as our treasured family member. Because of this, we offer a Guardian Home Program for some of our up and coming breeding prospects. We can only have a certain number of dogs living with us without sacrificing their quality of life and time with us.
A Guardian Home is a permanent home for one of our breeding prospect males or females. Being a Guardian Home gives you the opportunity to have one of our highest quality puppies join your family without the initial expense of purchasing him or her. At the appropriate age, we will utilize the dog in our breeding program periodically. At the end of the breeding commitment, he or she will be neutered or spayed at our expense and returned to you.
If you feel that you may be a good fit for a Guardian Home, please read the Guardian Agreement thoroughly and carefully consider the requirements.

Welcome to Our Program!
We created a Guardian-Home Program to grow our breeding program while still providing each of our breeding dogs with a loving environment in a guardian family.
By joining our Program, you desire to and will act as a guardian for a dog that is either a female potential breeder or proven breeder or a male potential breeder or proven breeder (“the Dog”), subject to the terms of this Agreement.
The following will spell out the Guardian-Home Program, including our requirements for guardian families while the Dog is a part of the breeding program, the obligations we will assume as the owner, and how the Dog will become a permanent member of your family.
Benefits of the Guardian-Home Program
To the Guardian family:
The Dog is “pick of the litter” and has a high value to us. The dog either cost us or would cost thousands of dollars. This dog will become part of your family with no initial cost. Native Corgis will remain the owner of the dog until this contract is completed and then the ownership will be transferred to the guardian family. Breeder will pay all vet costs for health testing associated with the breeding of the Dog.
Initial Obligations of Guardian Family
In order to be considered for the Guardian-Home Program, we require that you:
Live within 60 miles of Weatherford, TX (some exceptions may be made).
Own your own home.
Have physical fencing to provide a safe and secure environment for the Dog. This also protects the Dog from any unplanned, unwanted pregnancies and is crucial!
Never leave the Dog off leash in an unsecured area. NO dog parks allowed!
Have reliable transportation and willingness to bring the dog to us when needed throughout the year for breeding purposes (i.e. testing, breeding, litters, etc.).
Maintain open lines of communication with us concerning any matter related to the Dog.
Keep the Dog on dog food that is approved by Native Corgis and must be a grain inclusive formula. The dog must also receive daily NuVet and NuJoint Supplements.
The dog is to be kept in good body condition and kept healthy with routine vet care
The Dog must stay on Heartguard Heartworm Preventatives and Bravecto Flea and Tick (3 Month chew)
Do not cut the Dog's hair, Grooming is okay but do not trim any hair other than feet hair.
Understand that the breeder may need to make decisions about your female or male and you will have to respect those decisions. Examples may include, but are not limited to: keeping the female longer, additional vet care, etc. All decisions WILL ALWAYS BE for the betterment of the Dog.
Ownership
Ownership and all rights, title and interest in the Dog shall remain with the Owner / breeder, McKenna Harvell of Native Corgis. If the Dog is a female any puppies born to the Dog shall be the sole property of the Owner / breeder. The Guardian Family shall have no ownership interest of possession rights to any such puppy. If the Dog is a male, all semen shall be sole property of the Owner / breeder and the Guardian Family shall have no ownership interest of possession rights to any use of the semen. The Dog shall be used as breeding stock exclusively by the breeder and under no circumstances shall be bred to any dog other than as directed by the breeder. After the Dog ceases to be a Breeder, Owner shall, by written evidence of transfer, assign and transfer ownership of the Dog to the Guardian Family after spay or neuter.
Possession
General:
Upon the execution of this Agreement, Owner shall transfer possession of the dog to the Guardian Family. The Guardian family shall retain possession of the dog during this Agreement, subject to its obligations to return possession of the dog for breeding purposes and shall provide physical care to and supervision of the dog subject to the terms and conditions of this agreement.
Owner’s Possession for Breeding
Female: Owner requires access to female breeding dog for reasons including, but not limited to:
Veterinary appointments for general purposes and / or to monitor pregnancy
Breeding - first sign of going into heat (blood) until breeding has been completed. You can bring her to the breeder every time the dog needs bred (multiple times per cycle) OR leave her for the duration of the stay. This decision can be made by the Guardian family, at the discretion of the breeder.
Whelping. The dog must be brought to us 7-14 days prior to the Dog’s due date and up until the puppies are weaned at approximately 6‐8 weeks after birth. This process lasts approximately 9-12 weeks total.
General wellness check, which includes health, temperament check, socialization check, training check.
Native Corgis can arrange a day to take possession of the dog for new photographs, if needed.
Male: Owner requires access to male breeding dog for reasons including, but not limited to:
Veterinary appointments for general purposes and/or breeding related purposes
Reproduction checks
Breeding- the dog will be needed when it is time to breed a female. This is typically a 3-4 day process. The dog can stay or be brought to the owner/breeder for each breeding. This decision can be made by the Guardian family, at the discretion of the owner/breeder.
General wellness check, which includes but not limited to health, temperament, socialization, and training checks.
Native Corgis can arrange a day to take possession of the dog for new photographs, if needed.
Guardian Family Obligations
FEMALE:
The owner must be informed immediately when the dog shows signs of starting a heat cycle. The dog in heat is to be kept away from any unaltered dogs during this time and for a few weeks after. During this period, it is critical to stay in contact to determine the proper breeding time. The first breeding will take place at 18 months of age or on the second heat cycle. The breeding process is usually about a 4-5 day process and the dog can be left with us or brought each day as directed by us. No vaccinations, dewormer, flea and tick medications, heartworm medication, or any other medication should be given to the dog after breeding until the dog is done weaning her puppies, unless specified by the Owner. If medication or vaccinations is needed during this time, the owner must be made aware of it and will make the decision on how to proceed. Certain medications can interfere with pregnancy. At 30 days post breeding, pregnancy will be verified. If pregnant, the dog will be brought to us to stay 1-2 weeks prior to the due date and remain with us until the puppies are weaned; usually 6-8 weeks. Occasionally, a guardian family may wish to whelp and raise the puppies at their house. This will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This contract does not specify the number of litters for each female. That will be determined based on the female's mothering abilities and her overall health. Guardian Home Females will not be bred more than 5 times, while in their guardian home. It is important to us to maintain the best health for all our dogs, including guardian home dogs.
MALE:
The dog must be available for breeding when the breeder deems necessary. You will be notified as far in advance as the owner is capable of notifying the guardian home, this is based on how quickly the female dog progresses and can vary. The owner/Breeder will do their best to keep this as convenient for both parties involved as possible. Male Guardian Home Dogs are not limited to how many litters they will sire. They do not leave their guardian homes for extended periods of time like females do. Understand that the contract for a male in our guardian home should and will last longer due to the fact that they are not away from home for long amounts of time.
ALL GUARDIAN HOME DOGS (MALE AND FEMALE)
Raise the dog as an indoor dog. Never to dwell outside.
When left at home, safely contain the dog indoors (a crate is preferred). The dog must always be kept contained and safe. The dog must also be wearing identification any time it could potentially get out or lost.
Comply with Owner’s nutritional and dietary guidelines and pay all cost and expenses associated with feeding the dog while in the guardian homes care. The dog must receive daily NuVet and NuJoint Supplements. The dog also must be kept at a healthy weight.
The dog must be properly vetted and vaccinated on an agreed upon schedule between the owner/breeder and Guardian Home. All vaccinations, heartworm, and flea and tick medications must be approved by the owner. Once approved the dog must remain on the agreed upon medication and schedule.
Provide the Dog with regular exercise and socialization (people, locations and only spayed or neutered dogs). The dog should be socialized to all kinds of people and other dogs so it will be comfortable when the time comes for her or him to stay with us. The dog should be taught basic obedience in a professional setting and must be well behaved. Native Corgis requires all guardian homes to participate in BAXTER & Bella - The Online Puppy School or go through training with a trainer that is approved by the owner.
Provide pictures and updates bi-monthly.
The Guardian Family shall not transfer possession of the Dog to any person without the prior written consent of Owner.
If the dog needs to be boarded or cared for while out of town, it must be approved by the owner in advance.
Breeder has the right to visit the residence of the Guardian Family to discuss with the Guardian Family any issues concerning the care and supervision of the dog.
Allow the owner to take the dog off of your property for the purpose of health testing, breeding, or any other reason the breeder deems necessary.
Schedule and pay for all veterinary appointments (other than those associated with breeding, which will be covered by the Owner) and provide routine medical care appropriate for the breeding Dog.
Continue to ensure the dog is compliant, kennel-trained, housebroken, leash-trained, does not jump, mouth or excessively bark. The Dog’s puppies’ safety relies on calm and focused behavior.
The dog cannot move out of the area in which we are placing her or him. If it becomes necessary for the Guardian Home to relocate, if outside of the agreed area, the dog will need to be returned to the breeder until the contract is fulfilled. For this reason, we prefer to place our Guardian Home dogs with people that feel there is no chance of needing to relocate
Notify the Owner of any planned vacations and change of address, phone or email.
If the breeder finds it difficult to reach the Guardian Family, is met with roadblocks or cantankerous communication in any form (comments, phone calls, text messages etc.) that make this working relationship hostile and / or if the Guardian Family refuses to do anything breeder asks as set forth in this document, the dog will be removed from the home – no question.
Termination of Agreement
This Agreement shall terminate upon the occurrence of any of the following:
Immediately, upon the transfer of ownership of the Dog to the Guardian Family
Immediately, upon Owner’s determination that the Guardian Family is non‐compliant with the terms of this Agreement and such non‐compliance poses significant risk to the health, welfare, and safety of the Dog, at which time possession of the Dog returns to the Owner.
Immediately, upon the death of the dog from natural or accidental causes. In the event of early death from natural or accidental causes, the guardian home must have the dog necropsied within 12 hours to confirm the cause of death unless the Owner states otherwise
Immediately, upon the Guardian Family’s permanent return of the Dog to the Owner for any reason.
Indemnity
The Guardian Family agrees to indemnify and hold the Owner harmless from and against all claims, liabilities, losses, cost, damages, and expenses by reason of any damage property or injury or death to individuals allegedly caused by the Dog while in the possession of the Guardian Family.
Violation of the Agreement
If the Guardian Family intentionally violates this agreement and causes the dog to not be able to be bred, the guardian family will incur a fine that is equal to the cost of the dog plus whatever value the intended litters were worth.
Note: Contract not binding until signed by both Owner and Guardian Family. Upon signature completion, this contract will become a legal and binding document, as agreed by the Owner and Guardian Family. If the need should arise to settle any legal disputes concerning the dog, the Guardian Family agrees to have all proceedings conducted in Parker County, Texas. In the event of litigation from either party, the Owner is entitled to reimbursement to reasonable attorney fees.
IN WITNESS HERE OF: The parties have executed this Agreement as of ______________________.
